Students will have weekly homework in Reading, Spelling and Math. Homework will come home in Monday and Thursday folders. A typical 1st grader should spend around 20 minutes completing homework. This includes independent reading, practicing spelling words and math homework. Students will also have occasional homework that relates to specific lessons in class. Homework is not intended as “busy work” but rather an extention of what is learned in class. Please return homework by the end of each week.

Homework for Absences

The purpose of homework is to provide students with opportunities to apply learning from classroom interactions and instruction and transfer specific skills and concepts to new situations.  In addition, homework is designed to develop personal responsibility, self-discipline, and good work habits.  As with all instructional activities, homework assignments should be meaningful and relevant.  Please contact myself and the school office to confirm an absence due to illness or family vacation.

Absences Due to Illness

I will work with students to cover material missed during an absence for illness during the school day, during recess or by sending work home.  It is important not to interrupt the instructional day, so please do not request homework before the school day is over or go directly to the classroom.

Absence Due to Family Vacation

Due to individual family vacation schedules, I understand that it may be impossible to take vacations during the summer or during student vacation times. The school recognizes the values of travel and family time, but emphasizes the importance of children's attendance. Classroom learning is beneficial to students to the degree that it cannot be replicated at an earlier or later time. As the classroom teacher, I will decide the best way to assist the student and “catch up”.  Please note that in most cases, “class work packets” will not be created for students prior to the trip.  Students may take work that is routine each week such as journals, math pages, or books used in reading groups.

In addition, students who miss school due to a vacation are advised to engage in the following activities during the time they are away from school:

§               Keep a daily journal of their activities with attention to correct spelling, grammar usage and idea development appropriate for the age of the student.

§         Engage in reading activities daily for a minimum of thirty minutes.

§         Explore money concepts and use them in real situations whenever possible.

§         Practice math facts, play cards, or other math games appropriate for the age of the student.

§          Learn basic map concepts; use menus to strengthen literacy and making change concepts.

All students who are absent will have the same number of days to make up work as they were out.
