School Hours are 8:45 - 3:45 School begins at 8:45. Adult supervision begins at 8:30. Arriving students report to their designated area in the gym where they visit quietly or read a book until “Rose Union Rendezvous” begins. Afternoon dismissal is at 3:45. Parents needing childcare can contact Latchkey, who provides on-site childcare @ 236-2069. Attendance Please call the school office 405.359.3188 by 10:00 a.m. if your child is ill. Students should stay home if they have fever and until they have been fever- free for 24 hours. Please try to schedule appointments outside of the instructional day. Attendance is correlated to student success and hands-on learning is difficult to replicate with take home papers. Students arriving after 8:45 need to check in through the office. Students are subject to compulsory school attendance and truancy laws as required by the statutes of the State of Oklahoma and the regulations of the State Board of Education. Deer Creek School Board Attendance Policy requires students to be in attendance 89% of the school year to be eligible for promotion. Morning Arrival: Parents who wish to drop off their children must enter using the middle entrance located on 220th. After entering, cars will make a SINGLE line, facing east, in the front loop where cars will unload four at a time and students will enter the front doors. All cars will exit using the east exit onto 220th. Students will report to the gym upon arrival. The bus loop on the west side of the building is reserved for buses and day care providers only. Afternoon Dismissal: Afternoon car riders will be dismissed from their classrooms to sit in lines by grade level in front of the building. Parents will make a SINGLE line and show their student’s color-coded name in the front windshield. Duty teachers will call student names and load four cars at a time. Students will not be allowed to cross in front of traffic to find parents in parked cars. Students must remain seated until the duty teachers call their name. Students who fail to follow safety procedures will be asked to wait in the office until a parent parks and goes into the office to get their student. Dress Code Deer Creek’s policy on student dress is as follows: -
Students will be fully clothed and well groomed. -
All students shall wear footwear at all times. -
Headgear, such as hats, caps, bandannas, sunglasses and stocking caps are not to be worn at school. -
No halter tops, bare midriffs, off-the-shoulder tops, tube tops, spaghetti straps, backless or partial backless garments, tank tops, exposed underwear, outer garments that look like underwear, muscle shirts and mesh shirts w/o a t-shirt underneath. -
Apparel that is too tight, too loose, too sheer, too short, too revealing including tops, mini-skirts, short shorts, skirts w slits, and low-cut clothes including attire that exposes the chest is prohibited. Homework Policy Teachers allow extra time for students to complete work after an absence, so generally it is not necessary to get homework if the child is absent only a few days. However, if you do want homework collected please follow our policy: -
Wait until the child has been absent two consecutive days. -
Call before 10:00 the day you want homework collected. -
Teachers will collect the homework and have it in the office between 3:00-3:30. -
It is important not to interrupt the instructional day, so please do not request homework before the school day is over or go directly to the class. -
Requests for homework after 10:00 will be available the following day. Vacations Parents may need to take a child out of school for a family trip. We discourage this as classroom discussions and learning activities cannot be made up by simply doing the assigned homework. Teachers are not able to prepare lessons in advance for individual students who may be out because of family trips. Students may take work that is routine each week. They will be expected to make up other work when they return. All students who are absent will have the same number of days to make up work as they were out. For example, if they were out five days, they will have five school days to complete any assignments. Library Media Center All students may check out library books as needed. They may be exchanged as frequently as the student wishes, leaving class at the teacher’s direction. Lost and damaged items will be assessed at replacement prices. Lost & Found Please label all lunch boxes, backpacks and clothing with your child’s name. Items will be gathered and kept in the “lost & found” box. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity at the end of each semester. Lunch School lunches can be purchased for $2.00 per day, $10.00 per week or $90.00 for a 9-week period. Parents are invited to have lunch with their student at any time. Please call the office by 10:00 am to let the cafeteria know you will be coming. Adult prices are $2.50. Lunch times are as follows: 1st grade - 11:30 - 11:50 Parents are welcome to have lunch with their child. You and your child may eat together in the cafeteria or in the lobby. However, only your child can eat with you in the lobby; friends will eat in the cafeteria. Parents who bring “special lunches” to their children are asked to provide it for their student only. Students can only be checked out for lunch by their parent or a designated relative. Medication Students who must receive medication while at school are required to have a signed permission slip in the office. Medications are locked in the office and administered there. Medications must be in original pharmacy container labeled with specific directions. Safety/Security All school doors remain locked during the school day with the exception of the west front door entrance. All school visitors are required to identify themselves by checking in through the computerized system in the office and receiving a visitor badge. Security cameras also maintain a record of school visitors. Every effort is made to protect your child at school. Your support of safety procedures will also help. Your child should know your address, phone number, and the name and phone number of the sitter, relative or someone we can contact. Discuss with your child what to do if you are late in picking him/her up or cannot be home when he/she arrives. Caution your child not to leave school and certainly not to leave or ride with strangers. To protect your child, they will be called from the office when being checked out early, and ONLY to adults you have listed on the enrollment form. School Behavior Expectations Students will recite the “character pledge” each morning in Rose Union Rendezvous. Behavior expectations are to “live the character pledge”. Student behavior expectations focus on being respectful of self and others without interfering with the learning of others. “Respect, responsibility and citizenship too They bring out the best in me and you. Trustworthiness and being fair Help to show others that we really care. We all know what’s right, We all know what’s good. We will do the things we know we should.” Students who make behavior choices that interfere with the learning of others, or the teacher’s ability to teach will receive a reasonable consequence such as working in the office or loss of privileges. Time does not allow for us to contact the parent of every child who receives a consequence for inappropriate behavior, but will be contacted if the offense occurs again. Consequences are determined by the severity of the behavior, as well as the child’s age and level of development. Severe Weather School closing due to severe weather will be announced on the local television stations in the morning prior to school. In the event of a tornado threat, students will be moved to the Rose Union cafeteria, which is a FEMA approved storm shelter. Telephones/Cell Phones Office phones are available to students for emergency use only. Please make arrangements for after school plans and social events prior to the school day. Cell phones for students are not permitted to be turned on during school hours. If classtime is routinely interupted by a ringing phone, the student will be asked to take their cell phone to the office and it may be picked up by an adult at the end of the school day. Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining an instructional time with few disruptions as possible. Toys Students are not allowed to bring toys, gadgets, electronic games or anything that may cause a classroom disruption. Toy water play guns and knives are prohibited from school as part of the Dangerous Weapons policy. “Heelie” skate shoes are not appropriate for school. Visitors Parents are always welcome at school; however, all persons entering the school for personal or business purposes must sign in at the office and put on a nametag. If you need to confer with a teacher, please call ahead for an appointment. Dropping by the classroom interrupts valuable instructional time. Please leave lunch money, lunches, papers, books, etc., at the office so classes are not disturbed. All Deer Creek School Board Policies are available in their entirety at central office.
